Last year I photographed a wedding in which John was a groomsmen (shoutout to Sean & Brig!). John recently reached out to me to ask for his help in an upcoming surprise. He told me of his plans to ask his girlfriend Jenna to be his wife. He planned to take her to the rooftop of their apartment building for a cocktail before meeting Sean & Brigitte for dinner.
As the day of the big surprise rolled around, I got insanely nervous. I was a big ball of nerves arriving (in a hat & sunglasses just incase she would recognize me from any previous weddings she’d been to!) nervous to get into the apartment building without her wondering who was buzzing John’s phone to be let in…. nervous to find a good spot on the rooftop… nervous for John… just NERVOUS! However, all morning I kept thinking how amazing it was that a woman I don’t even know was about to have her life changed tonight & she had no idea. Randomly throughout the day, I thought of Jenna & wondered what she was doing at that moment – completely clueless of what was to come.
I found my way to their rooftop and pretended to work on my laptop (camera hidden from sight) and waited for them to arrive. After a few minutes, they strolled up the stairs & set their aperol spritz cocktails on a table. I remembered from John’s email that his thought was to have a drink & then walk over to the railing with her & propose there. However, I also remembered him saying that he didn’t think he could wait very long once they were on the roof. Sure enough, they never sat down. 🙂 I knew it was go-time when after looking toward the city for about 30 seconds, John turned to her & grabbed her hands. ….and the rest can be told from the story of photographs below.
So many congrats to you, John & Jenna!! What a sweet honor it was to watch this moment unfold for you!
